WPPD investigates stabbing

November 21, 2013

West Point Police Department investigators are investigating an alleged stabbing in city limits.
Just after 10 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a E-911 dispatch call to the Oak Park apartment complex on Cromwell Street in West Point. Upon arrival, officers found an unidentified man in a vehicle on the premises. The victim had suffered from two stab wounds to the upper torso.

Sammy J Smith, age 74 died Nov. 18, 2013, at his home in Starkville.
He was a long-time merchant and owner of Smith & Byars Clothiers in Starkville, one of the oldest men’s clothing shops in continuous operation in Mississippi.

Melvyn Byrd

November 21, 2013

There will be a celebration of the life of Melvyn Byrd, who passed away at his home in Russelville Ark. He was formerly of West Point.
The celebration of life will commence at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at West End Baptist Church with Dr. Eddie Gandy of Springhill Fla., officiating.
Family, friends and the West Point High School Class of 1964 are invited to come, share and celebrate the life of Melvyn Byrd.

Shirley A. Featherston

Shirley A. Featherston, 79, of Brooksville, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center-Hospice.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Brooksville Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Bro. Ben Yarber and Bro. Jerome Key officiated. Interment followed in Brooksville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to NMMC-Hospice Inpatient, 830 S. Gloster St., Tupelo, MS 38801.
Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is in charge of arrangements.

Hebron gets first district wins over Calhoun

PHEBA — Rebekah Falkner led the Lady Eagles with 17 points and Hebron Christian (2-0) picked up a win over the Calhoun Lady Cougars, 65-35, in a MAIS basketball game Tuesday on the campus of Hebron Christian School.
Holly Hudson tallied 14 points, Alaina Hill scored 12 points and Subrina Oswalt knocked down 10 points in Hebron’s fifth consecutive win since the second preseason game against Washington School at the Winona Christian Preseason Tournament.
Regan Hubbard led Calhoun with 14 points.

Civitans ready to help with EMCC new Workforce Training initiatives

The West Point Civitan Luncheon Club launched one of its new implementations with naming Fifth Street Junior High instructor Pamela Bush Anderson as Civitan ‘Teacher of the Quarter.; Civitan and former teacher Bettye Swift presented Anderson with a plaque and a gift card to show the Civitan’s appreciation for educators and all they do in instructing young people.
