October 8, 2013

Jeanette Woods age 58, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at the DCH Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at 1 p.m. from Pleasant Grove Pool’s M.B. Church with Rev. James A. Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Pool’s Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is today, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, from 3-6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

The West Point Green Wave's second-half rally fell short against a rising Clarksdale Wildcat team as West Point lost its second consecutive District 1-5A game, 39-34, Friday at Hamblin Stadium in West Point.

Oak Hill clinches district win over Manchester

YAZOO CITY – Five first-half rushing touchdowns helped the Oak Hill Raiders (4-3; 2-1) rout the Manchester Academy Mavericks (1-6; 0-2) 47-6 in a MAIS District 2-AA contest Friday at Buster Crawford Stadium on the campus of Manchester Academy.
In a season-high offensive performance, the Raider rushing attack tallied 39 carries for 457 yards on the ground. The 457-yard rushing total is the most gained on the ground under second-year head coach Daniel Merchant.

Wilson talks Southern at montly Luncheon with Books meeting

Charles Reagan Wilson will speak on all things Southern Wednesday at Luncheon with Books. The event takes place at noon in the Esther Pippen room of the Bryan Public Library, and is sponsored by Friends of the Library. Lunch is available for a $6 donation.

Supervisors address RV ordinance

The Clay County Board of Supervisors convened Monday to discuss, among other things, a rewording in the proposed RV ordinance.
Following the beginning prayer by District 4 Supervisor Shelton Deanes, the board went straight to business.

Vandals strike in West Point

The West Point Police Department is investigating several reports of vandalism that have been flooding the airwaves since last week.
According to WPPD Chief Tim Brinkley, the alleged vandals have been taking it upon themselves to throw “rocks and other objects” at passing vehicles. Additionally, Brinkley said certain reports indicate it is possible “the same group of young people” are perpetrating these crimes.

Hebron Christian welcomes winless, scoreless Strider for Homecoming

PHEBA – Streaks abound in tonight’s MAIS eight-man contest as Hebron Christian holds a three-game home losing streak hosting a visiting Strider Academy that is nursing two negative streaks, as well.
A 16-game losing period that began on Aug. 17, 2012, against Hebron in Pheba is coupled with a five game scoreless streak in the 2013 season as the Rams are unable catch a break on the gridiron.

Oak Hill looks to capitalize in October

The month of October brings cooler temperatures, colorful leaves and the beginning of the fall season with Halloween.
Outside of these autumn occurrences, the Oak Hill Raider football team knows that October brings increasingly important football games if the Raiders want to return to the MAIS Class-AA playoffs in November this season.
“It’s definitely important to get a good start tonight, hopefully this will be an October to remember,” Oak Hill second-year head coach Daniel Merchant said about his team rising to the occasion this month.

West Point hosts rising Clarksdale

Henry Johnson, head coach of the Clarksdale Wildcats, is excited about the upcoming match-up his team has drawn in week seven of the MHSAA football season.
For the first-year Clarksdale coach, the chance to compete with the West Point Green Wave will be an excellent measuring tool for his team.

Mildred Louise Robertson - Blanchard, age 55 died on September 26, 2013 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Grove M.B. Church with Rev. Robert S. Traylor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in West Point, MS. Visitation will be held no Friday, October 4, 2013 at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel from 3 - 6:00 p.m.. Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of the arrangements.
