Oak Hill hosts Leake Academy

The Oak Hill Raiders (5-4; 2-2 District 2-AA) are wrapping up the regular season against Leake Academy in the last district game at 7 p.m. tonight on the campus of Oak Hill Academy in West Point.
Following a tough 49-14 loss to district opponent Canton Academy on the road, the Raiders are hoping to rebound with a more competitive contest with the Leake Rebels at home.

Hebron takes on Friendship

PHEBA – Hebron Christian (5-3; 3-0 District 7-A) is holding a three-game winning streak and looks to continue the momentum against Friendship Christian Academy in its final non-district home game of the regular season at 7:30 p.m. tonight on the campus of Hebron Christian School.

West Point has trailed at halftime three times during the first four district contests. When losing at halftime, the Green Wave has faced a combined deficit of 64-14 and has lost two of the three games.
That luck changed against Lake Cormorant in week eight as West Point used a major comeback to clinch its second district win, 24-21, after falling behind in the first two quarters, 21-0.

Sammie Thomas Webb

Sammie Thomas Webb age 58, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, in Eupora.
Funeral services are Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. from New Hope M.b. Church in Woodland with Rev. Henry L. Brownlee officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Lenora Gathings

October 25, 2013

Lenora H. Gathings age 85, passed away Wednesday. Oct. 23, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center of West Point.
Funeral services are Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at noon from St. Mark C.O.G.I.C. with Pastor Norman Jamison Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Gathings Cemetery in Gibson.
Visitation is Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, from 1 – 3 p.m. at Carter’s Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter’s Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Deltas donate to South Side library

The Clay County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. made a donation of books Thursday to the library at South Side Elementary School.
“The Deltas donate books to South Side library and the next year we make a donation to the Bryan Public Library,” said Clay County Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. President Gail Atkins. “We rotate every year with our donation knowing that both libraries are used by area children. It’s a small way the Deltas can give back to the community.”

United Way hosts campaign kickoff

Thursday brought with it United Way’s Campaign Kickoff Luncheon celebrating its 30 years of operations, and welcomed local best-selling author and Mossy Oak Biologic President Bobby Cole as the guest speaker.
Since its inception in 1983, United Way of Clay County has strived to fund, through public donations, health and human organizations. After a collective of civic-minded residents felt it desirable to expand the local Community Chest into a more expansive organization, the train truly began.

Road paving strikes chord

The Clay County Board of Supervisors convened Thursday to discuss the drafted agenda as well as lending an ear to comments from the public.
West Point resident Ruby Brooks had a couple of things to say regarding the ongoing road paving of White Station Rd.
“There’s too much dust,” said Brooks. “And rocks (that are so thick). They need to take that stuff off the road.”
