Football wrap up

The West Point Green Wave (3-4; 1-2 District 1-5A) was looking to pick up a win after two consecutive district losses.
Behind Aeris Williams' career effort of 252 yards on 26 carries and four touchdowns, West Point was able to outscore the Center Hill Mustangs in a shoot-out, 69-41.

Victor Chism

Victor Chism, 72, passed away, on Friday, October 11, 2013 at OCH Regional Medical Center,
in Starkville. He was born June 10, 1941 in Monroe County Mississippi to the late Miriam Roberts Chism and Albert
Doyle Chism. Mr. Chism was a Dye Setter for Blazon Flexible Flyer for 35 years and was of the Penetecostal faith. Victor
Chism married Eunice Oswalt Chism on June 5, 1965, in West Point.
Visitation with a gathering of family and friends will be Sunday, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home.

Raymond Winters

Raymond Andrew Winters, age 68, of Ethelsville, AL passed away at the residence of his sister on Oct 10, 2013, surrounded by family, after a hard fought bout with prostate cancer.

Gordon Pettit

Gordon "Smokey" Pettit, 73, passed away, on Monday, October 14, 2013 at his home, in West
Point. Gordon "Smokey" Pettit was born February 19, 1940 in Houston, Mississippi to the late Syble Iris Walters Pettit
and Perry James Pettit. He was a B Fitter-Welder for Babcock & Wilcox Company for 33 years. He was of the
Methodist faith. Gordon Stewart Pettit married Patsy Beatrice Merideth Pettit on June 18, 1961 in Walthall, Mississippi.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 16, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Brother

Local United Way to celebrate 30 years

The Clay County chapter of the United Way is set to host its Campaign Kickoff Luncheon noon Oct. 24 at the Civic.
Bobby Cole, local author of The Dummy Line and Moon Underfoot, will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon.
United Way raises and allocates funds for 14 human service organizations serving the residents of Clay County. Stacy Hays, executive director of United Way of Clay County, explained that these agencies touch the lives of thousands of people each year.

WPPD to dish out bicycle helmets for area children

If one happens to stroll by the West Point Police Department Saturday morning, he or she might notice something amiss taking place in the parking lot for all to see.
Rest assured, it will not be a crime scene. Those typically aren’t scheduled in advance.
Take a few, maybe even 10 or 20, steps toward the gathering and lend an observational eye.
Those are bike helmets, and there’s not a single price tag on the lot of them.
Children with bikes but no helmet are the focus of a cooperative effort by both the city and WPPD.

Link looks at options in light of vacancy

The Golden Triangle Development LINK has hit a crossroads in light of a recent vacancy of the Vice President of Economic Development position in Clay County.
Previous occupant of the position, Ron Maloney, was part of the collective which assisted in bringing about the Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Plant to boost West Point’s industrial presence on the national stage. However, Maloney recently accepted a position in his hometown of Pennsylvania.
