West Point Green Wave basketball head coach Brad Cox asked his senior basketball players to select a West Point High School teacher that had made an impact in their life. Stan Hughey’s squad continued their winning ways this past weekend with two convincing wins over Canton Academy and North Delta. The Lady Raiders beat the Lady Panthers 58-22 and the Lady Green Wave 46-34.
Tori Nichols towered over many of her opponents at a dominant 6’3” during her time at Hebron Christian, not only height-wise, but talent-wise. Last year, Nichols and her fellow Lady Eagles made a deep run into the MAIS postseason and made it to the State All-Around in Clinton before being eliminated.
Sometimes it takes a little luck when it comes to winning basketball games. After winning three of their previous four games, the Raiders dropped two contests over the weekend in a 48-53 home loss to Canton and 47-56 on the road to North Delta, continuing Oak Hill’s streak of very close losses. The second loss to the Panthers will place the Raiders in the third seed of the district tournament to face Winston in a go-home game.
Gov. Phil Bryant on Monday issued a Writ of Election for Mississippi House District 36, setting March 12, 2013, as the election date to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Rep. David Gibbs.
The qualifying deadline for candidates is Feb. 11, 2013.
If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast in the special election, a runoff election will be held April 2, 2013.
The election will fill the House seat left vacant after the death of Clay County native David Gibbs earlier this month.
When Aberdeen native Roderick Van Daniel was a 17-year-old senior in high school he wondered curiously of what it would be like to one day serve the people of his hometown as a leader for the state of Mississippi. And fortunately for him he got a rare, up close and personal experience of the role of a state leader while gleefully serving as a page for former District 36 Representative David Gibbs.
