Oak Hill girls prep for season opener

On Monday, the Oak Hill Lady Raiders kick off their season with a trip to Starkville Academy.
The Lady Raiders share a conference with Winston, Manchester, Canton and Leake Academies.
Leake Academy begins the season on the heels of a 70-game winning streak and back-to-back state championships.
“Everybody in our conference is playing for second,” Oak Hill coach Marion Bratton said. “Their pitcher is one of the top ranked pitchers in the state and she’s a good hitter and an excellent runner, too. It seems like it takes her about three steps to get to first out of the box.”

Mablen Harley Chandler, age 88, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Methodist Healthcare in Memphis, Tenn. Funeral services are at noon, Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Kyle Chapel M. B. Church, in Vardaman, with the Rev. Jimmy Lee Washington officiating. Burial will follow in Midway Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday, July 27, 2012, from 4 - 6 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.

Legion Team Recall Slow Start, Hot Finish In 2002 (Part 2)

By the time the Bryan Packers played Tuscaloosa’s Hillcrest on June 11, the season was almost two weeks old.
The Packers took a pair of games, winning 9-7 and 7-5. It was their first wins on the season.
“Some couldn’t come at the beginning,” Packers coach Frank Portera said. “They came on a little later in the year. You’ve got graduation stuff, you’ve got senior trips, you’ve all this stuff. There’s a couple of weeks in there before you can get everybody together where so much is going on that we didn’t get together until a week or two until after the season had started.”

Legion Baseball Has Memorable 8 Year Run

It would be known in the baseball history books as the year there was no World Series. The Major League Baseball season was in trouble as early as June, 1994, with tensions between players and owners building before erupting with a strike in August, leaving thousands of angry fans in its wake.
That spring, someone approached Frank Portera about starting an American Legion baseball program in West Point.

Charity Tournament This Weekend

It started as a suggestion.
“We put up a suggestion box months ago,” West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley. “It’s for officers who have ideas or suggestions about how we could run the department better or how we could better contact the community.”
Detective Sgt. Albert Lee suggested a charity softball tournament.
“We have all kinds of things for kids,” Lee said. “But I thought it would be good to go forward with all the departments in the city. It’s a healthy thing, a good way to get exercise for city employees.”

Pilot Club looks ahead in meeting

It was all business at the Tuesday night meeting of the Pilot Club of West Point.
New officers were installed during the last meeting and the Pilots are starting the 2012-2013 year. President Debra Cole was at the helm and opened the floor for discussion of the upcoming Pilot International Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cole and several other club members are making last minute arrangements to attend the convention and represent the Pilot Club of West Point.
