Darrell Myers

Darrell Myers, age 59, passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at his home.
He was born July 30, 1953, in West Point, to the late Bill Myers and Maycel Charles Myers. He was a former supervisor for Clay County, serving for 11 years. When serving as supervisor, Mr. Myers was on the GTPD Board and the Education Committee for the M.A.S. He was a contractor and retired dairy farmer.

ACLU plans protest against Hinds “sagging pants” law

The American Civil Liberties Union will not be outside of any Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Hinds County this week.
The famous civil liberties watchdog group will be focusing its attentions on Hinds’ recent ordinance making it illegal for individuals to wear sagging pants.
The ACLU claims that the laws and others like it unfairly target black men and it says that the law is a violation of freedom of expression.

Brinkley: Town Creek Apartments violence a “public safety issue”

Fights, stabbings and frequent gunfire sound like a description of the Old West.
This is a sad reality for the law abiding residents of Town Creek Square Apartments in West Point. So much so that West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley is treating the small complex’s violence problems as an issue of public safety.
“We recognize that we have a public safety issue with Town Creek Apartments,” Brinkley said on Friday, just after talking to the apartment’s management “We have strived to work with the complex managers to make that apartment complex a safer environment for the residents.”

Police seek Haughton for aggravated assault

In the early hours of Friday morning, the West Point Police Department responded to three separate domestic disturbances at Town Creek Square Apartments.
The second incident resulted in a laceration wound on individual, and a warrant has been issued for Lantra Haughton for aggravated assault.
West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said on Friday that the initial call was put in just after midnight, and it was pertaining to a disturbance and a man lying on the ground at the rear of the apartment.

James Anderson Curry

James Anderson Curry, age 83, passed away Saturday, July, 30, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral services are Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. from Mt. Hermon M.B. Church, with the Rev. Tim Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, from 2 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

WPHS give parents leg up on paperwork

WPHS got a jump on all the paperwork needed for the students to begin the 2012-2013 school year.
Parent Orientation was held at the North Campus for the entire high school. Lines were long at each of the 13 different tables requiring signatures from parents, students names, the grade the child was entering and all sorts of information needed at the beginning of each school year.
Proof of residency was a requirement this year for every student. Two forms of I.D. were needed to assure that children are enrolled in the correct school district.

Thomas "Tom" Blaylock

Thomas "Tom" Blaylock, age 80, retired manager at Futorian Mfg. died Monday at his residence in Eupora. Funeral services are 4 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at the Eupora First Baptist Church, with burial in the Webster Memorial Garden Cemetery.
Visitation is from 1-4 p.m. today, at Eupora First Baptist Church.
Thomas Blaylock was the brother of Peggy Ingram and the uncle of Ann Wilkerson. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora is in charge of all arrangements.

Edward E. “Big Ed” Walker Sr.
Edward Walker Sr., age 69, passed away July 29, 2012, in Meridian.
Mr. Walker was born July 19, 1943, in Ill., to the late Charles C. Walker and Nina Wigginton Walker. Mr. Walker drove a truck for Bryan Foods for 35 years and was a member of the Sons of American Legion, Post #26.

Legion Team Plays Regional in Kansas City (Part 3)

At 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, the Bryan Packers pulled out ofthe West Point High School parking lot.
The team was without All-Area Player of the Year, starting first baseman Lance Martin and starting third baseman “Hot” Rod Williams.
Martin and Williams had accepted scholarships to play football and practice had begun. The pair would miss the trip to Kansas City, Mo.for the American Legion Mid-South Regional.
The bus made it to the windmill on Highway 50, headed toward the Birmingham Airport when a car pulled up behind, flashing its lights.
