October 13th
Friday night, the West Point High Green Wave travelled north to take on and defeat the Saltillo High Tigers.
First, a retraction from the game story last week. The final touchdown of last week’s game was scored by number 43; however, #43 is Brad Ewing.
This Friday, though, as with weeks in the past, many more players got a chance to stand out. Antonio Dent (#57), Lagarius Wordlaw (#12), Antreon Bennett (#26), Terrence Minor (#27) and the powerhouse Mario Virges (#20) each made huge contributions throughout the game.
The October 2012 term of Clay County Circuit Court concluded Thursday afternoon after several more sentencing orders were entered and after a few more cases were continued to the January 2013 and April 2013 terms of court.
The following pleas and sentences were handed down as of Oct. 9, 2012:
Former Lee County Correctional Officer Dustin Tutor of Mantachie joins the West Point Police Department staff as a patrol officer who holds an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice and brings along several years of law enforcement experience.
Friday night gave the Oak Hill Academy Raiders (4-5; 1-3) something the team needed desperately. It was a 37-14 victory over New Site.
It had been nearly a month since Oak Hill came out on top in a match. That was a non-district home game against Winona on September 14.
Over the next three weeks, the Raiders fell consecutively to Canton (district), Leake (district) and Heritage. In the last two games, Oak Hill had been out-scored 84-0.
The Hebron Christian Eagles found themselves ending their road game stretch with a visit to Billy D. Cook Field on the campus of Calhoun Academy.
This was a battle of undefeated teams Friday night, and only one team could leave on the night with a perfect record. Hebron and Calhoun both left everything on the field in a very hard fought battle. Unfortunately, the ball bounced the Cougars favor more times than for the Eagles. Though the score does not reflect the true game, Calhoun Academy were the 40-12 victors on the night.

Howard Walker
Howard Walker, age 94, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral services are Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. from Mt. Zion Whites M.B. Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Whites M.B. Church Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, from 4-6 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.
Carter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
James Curtis Peoples
James Curtis Peoples, age 53, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at his home.
Funeral services are Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at 11 a.m. from Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel, with the Rev. Calvin Chandler officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is one hour prior to service at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
Of the more exciting times associated to the regular season of football, it would be hard to make a determination as to which is as the highest level: the weeks leading up to the season’s beginning or the weeks leading toward season’s end.
For the players, coaches and fans of the three local schools, the responses to this are all over the board.

Beth Millsaps Brantley
Beth Millsaps Brantley, age 67, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Dugan Memorial Home, in West Point.
Helen Hazlewood Clifton
Helen Hazlewood Clifton, age 89, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center, in West Point. She was born May 18, 1923, in Union County, to the late Lula Crumpton and John Fernando Herring. Mrs. Clifton was a Nurses Aide at Ivy Memorial Hospital and a member of the Pentecostal Church. Husbands, Sidney Earl Hazlewood, Nov. 10, 1969, and Thomas K. Clifton, Aug. 13, 1993, preceded her in death.
