September 27th
West Point city officials and the Mississippi Department of Health have confirmed one case of West Nile virus in West Point.
West Point Chief Administrative Officer Randy Jones said a resident in the Northwood Forest area has contracted the virus.
Citizens of West Point and Clay County are urged to drain all items around their homes that is holding standing water and use mosquito repellant with deet to protect against the virus.
City officials will continue spraying five days a week for mosquitoes as they have been over the past couple of weeks.Â

Hattie M. Brooks
Hattie M. Brooks, age 68, passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral services are Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. from St. Matthew C.O.G.I.C., with the Rev. Dwight Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, from 3-6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
September 22nd
Hebron entered into tonight’s football game 5-0 and played host to Central Academy from Macon, Mississippi.
Coach Foster mercifully did not play his starters against a definitely weak Central Academy who had earlier in the week threatened to forfeit the game. The Eagles, though slow to start the game, finished strong in the second half winning 30-0.
Friday night, the West Point High Green Wave hosted the Lake Cormorant Gators, defeating them 23-17.
Balmy and slightly chilly, the Green Wave took the field, ready to win their homecoming game. Several standout players made crucial plays in clutch situations to ensure victory by night’s end.
Mario Virges (#20) was a powerhouse for the West Point defense, along with Freddie Reed (#44), Ed Brown (#56) and Lederrius Gallion (#90) on the line. The Green Wave defense was able to really set the pace of the game, while the West Point offense was in charge of time management.
The Oak Hill Academy Raiders (3-3;1-2) offense has had its struggles thus far in 2012, but Friday night’s home match against Canton was the roughest outing yet for the team.
Eight turnovers, including seven fumbles and a lone interception, would make all the difference in a 48-15 Tiger win over the Raiders.
“You can’t turn the ball over seven times against a good team like Canton,” said head coach Daniel Merchant after the game.

Jimmy Blankenship
James Raymond “Jimmy” Blankenship, age 67, of Columbus, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Healthcare – Golden Triangle.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home.
Visitation was Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, from 6 – 8p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Mullins officiating. Interment immediately followed in Davis Cemetery in West Point.
Keyston Amar Avant
Keyston Amar Avant, infant son of Crystal D. Bean and Keon Avant, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville.
Graveside services were Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at 3 p.m. from Johnson Creek Cemetery, with the Rev. Bruce Guyton officiating.
Carter's Mortuary Services was in charge of arrangements.
Michael Ross Montgomery
Michael Ross Montgomery, age 40, passed away Thursday, Sept, 20, 2012, in Starkville. He grew up in Long Beach. He was a landscape designer with Mississippi Gardens and attended Broadmoor Baptist Church, Adaton Baptist Church and New Covenant Church. Michael Ross Montgomery was a graduate of Mississippi State University, with two bachelor degrees; one in Landscape Architecture and the other in Landscape Construction and Management.
Grady Berryhill
Grady Berryhill, age 89, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center, in Tupelo.
He was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Monroe County, to the late Susan Head Berryhill and Wilford Franklin Berryhill. Mr. Berryhill was a Mechanic having had worked for Bryan Foods, Bishop Chevrolet, Jameson Ford, TXI and later in his own shop. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Mr. Berryhill was a Veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he was an Aircraft Mechanic during WW II. Grady Berryhill married Jimmie Dell
Pierce Williams III
Pierce Williams III, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at his home.
Funeral services are Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. from St. Paul M.B. Church, with the Rev. Eddie Longstreet officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, from 3 – 6 p.m. from Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
