West Point turns eyes to Jackets after second-round win over Titans

It was the second round of the 5-A playoffs, and West Point looked spectacular against the Ridgeland Titans.
Everything was hitting on all cylinders as the Wave controlled all three aspects of the game. Offensively and defensively, West Point looked high-caliber and explosive throughout. Along with the special teams play with contribution in the kicking game from Eric Lemus and a kick-off return touchdown by Aeris Williams.
“We hit on all cylinders, we came out and we were ready,” said Quarterback Tez Lane about the Wave’s offense performance.

Student-athlete and honorable citizen, Ed Brown

Many people have seen Ed Brown playing on Friday night in the green and white, others have spotted him at church, and many know Ed from his involvement in the classroom. Yet where ever you see Ed Brown, everyone that has encountered him sees he has special abilities.
On the field, Ed is playing his final season for West Point and starting at defensive end. He is impressive to watch; he finds himself in the opponents’ backfield constantly and stirs up trouble for offenses. Brown collected 4 sacks this past Friday night against Ridgeland in the second round playoff game.

Food Pantry needs volunteers for holidays and beyond

County Extension Director Donna Cliett spends many of her waking hours putting food packages together at the West Point Food Pantry inside the old Mary Holmes College gymnasium.
The food assortments are put together by volunteers and are provided monthly to 439 Clay County families who are in need. That’s almost 800 people total.
This holiday season the Food Pantry is not just in need of food and donations to keep local families fed, but the institution that has been around for over 15 years needs volunteer labor.

Conner brings 16 years of experience to Kroger

Labaris “LB” Conner is a testament that patience does pay off.
Sitting in his office at West Point’s Kroger grocery store on Monday, Conner recalled how in 1996 he was given a shot at bagging groceries at his local Kroger in Columbus. Today he’s the head man in charge in West Point’s store, and besides trying to get the local store into the black budget-wise, Conner has an opportunity to give local teenagers the same shot at a career he got 16 years ago.
“I could have 20 people here,” Conner said. “I may get three out of those 20, but if I can reach those three, my job is done.”

Mary Rose Lyon, age 88, passed away, Saturday, November 17, 2012. at North Mississippi Medical Center, West Point.
Mary Rose Lyon was born July 21, 1924. in Cedar Bluff, to the late Cora Lee Davis Lyon and George Wilbur Lyon. Mary Rose Lyon was a Corporate Secretary for Mitchell Automotive from September 10, 1946, until July, 2010. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

R.L. Walker, age 63, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center of West Point.
Funeral services are Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. from Third Mt. Olive M.B. Church, with the Rev. Al Lathan Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Gospel Temple Cemetery.
Visitation is today, Tuesday, November 20, 2012, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
