Win over Immanuel, losses elsewhere earn Raiders Wild Card spot in 2012 playoffs

October 27, 2012

First thing’s first.
The Oak Hill Academy Raiders (6-5; 2-3) had to defeat Immanuel Christian (3-7; 0-5) on Friday night to even have a shot at a playoff berth.
Mark that one off the checklist. The Raiders slid by Immanuel 20-19 on a cold, windy and slightly rainy Friday night.
Next order of business was to keep an eye on the scoreboard from around the state because a wild card berth would have to come at the hands of Winston Academy and Manchester Academy loses to Leake and Canton respectively.

Oak Hill headed to Playoffs

October 26, 2012

It had to happen exactly how it happened.
Oak Hill Academy (6-5; 2-3) took care of business against Immanuel Christian 20-19.
Leake and Canton both won their games, and that not only secures a winning season for Oak Hill for the first time since 2006, but it puts them in the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
Congratulations to Coach Daniel Merchant, the players and the Oak Hill family. This is a truly great accomplishment.

Severstal tour provides look at finished project

October 25, 2012

Tons of molten metal poured from the ladles inside the Severstal Columbus steel plant on Monday. The liquid that was seen pouring from the giant containers would just two hours later become about eight rolls of metal sheets that will be shipped to firms all around the country.
County and city leaders were treated to seeing the day-to-day process of making steel, but more importantly, they were treated to seeing what a large and operational industrial site looks like.

Tough competition through nine games preps Green Wave for district showdown with Oxford

October 24, 2012

Sometimes a team has to face the very best early on in order to be ready for greater challenges down the road.
This could be said for the 2012 West Point Green Wave (7-2; 5-0) who will face perhaps their toughest challenge on Friday night when the undefeated Oxford Chargers (9-0; 5-0) come into town.
It’s not certain if the Chargers will be the best team West Point has faced this year, but Oxford comes to town a district challenger, with the district on the line.
Neither team has lost a district game to date.

With a win and some help, OHA tries to make 2012 playoffs

October 24, 2012

The Oak Hill Academy Raiders (5-5; 1-3) have had some kind of a turn-around season in 2012.
The Raiders did not win a single game during the 2011 campaign, but under new leadership the team has rebounded for five regular season wins with one to go.
That one game that is left is perhaps the biggest of the season. If the Raiders win against Immanuel on Friday night, Oak Hill will have done its job in terms of setting itself up for a playoff appearance.

Clay County on track despite regional contract delay

October 20, 2012

The Golden Triangle Regional Development Authority has hit its first bump in the road, but Clay County’s economic development team will not be affected by a delay created at this week’s Starkville City Council meeting.
“Everything in Clay County is on track,” said Joe Max Higgins, CEO of the Columbus-Lowndes Development LINK. Clay County has been in contract with the LINK since the Spring, and Higgins’ team has been working to bring industry into Clay County since then.

Green Wave QB in on five first half scores to lead West Point past Center Hill 55-7

October 20, 2012

Every game is critical at this point in the season.
Friday night’s district match between the West Point Green Wave (7-2;5-0) and Center Hill was no exception. Playing their fifth straight out of seven consecutive division games to end the season, West Point was looking to improve on a stomping of Saltillo the week before.
The Green Wave did just that, taking care of the Center Hill Mustangs 55-7.
