Carruthers Turns 80
Eliza Carruthers turned 80 years old Friday Nov. 18. She celebrated her birthday with family and friends Nov. 12, at Ryan's Steak House in Columbus, including her husband, James Carruthers and their five children, Mildred Griffin, Dorothy McQuarters, Rickey Cannon, Carolyn Donald and Janice Tillman, ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Barker, Mobley Engagement
Mr. and Mrs. Phil Barker are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Elizabeth Cole Barker, to Bradley Joel Mobley son of Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Mobley.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tucker of Aberdeen, Mr. and Mrs George Vickers of West Point, and the late Mr. Jimmy Barker.
Valsamakis, Broome Engagement
Mr. and Mrs. Chris Alex Valsamakis of Aberdeen, Miss., are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Katie Elaine Valsamakis, to Christopher Dale Broome, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Dale Broome of Hamilton, Miss.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Beryl Wilbanks, of Amesbury, England, and the late Mr. Durrell Wilbanks.
She is a 1998 graduate of Oak Hill Academy, and furthered her education at Mississippi State University in 2002 and Mississippi University for Women in 2003.
Area high schools return to the court tonight.
Hebron Christian School will host Carroll Academy while Oak Hill will travel to Columbus for a rematch with Heritage.
Later this week, the Eagles and Lady Eagles will travel to Winona Dec. 1 and the Raiders and Lady Raiders will travel to Kirk Dec.1 before hosting Marshall Dec.3.
West Point returns to action Friday for a rematch with Starkville before hosting Louisville on Saturday.
The extra time Austin Kinard put in to work on his shooting paid off on Monday.
Kinard heated up from the outside and scored 20 points to help the Starkville Academy Volunteers to a 66-48 victory over the Oak Hill Raiders at the SA gymnasium.
"I've been just working in practice every day after school with my shooting and it helped out for me (Monday night)," Kinard said.
Calvin Young led the Vols with 21 points, but Kinard's contribution was an added bonus.
Starkville Academy coach Mark Alexander was proud of what Kinard provided and looks for it to continue.
DEKALB â€“ Kemper Countyâ€™s eight point run in the last two minutes all but sealed a 62-53 win over West Point Monday night, snapping a two-game winning streak by the Green Wave.
Down by five with a little over six minutes left to play in the contest, Daryl Thomas hit back-to-back threes to pull them within one before Cortez Malone gave them the lead. Malone finished with 17, including 12 in the first half. That was short lived as Kemper went on an eight-point run late in the quarter to grab the win.
Dee L. Rhea
Dee L. Rhea, age 87, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical
Center in West Point.
Dee L. Rhea was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Hickory Flat, to the late Rosie May Ausburn and Thomas Jefferson Rhea. He worked in Maintenance for the TXI United Cement Company in Artesia, then after he retired he worked part time in Maintenance at NMMC-West Point. Mr. Rhea was a member of West Point Church of God. Dee L. Rhea married Frances Louise Smith on April 15, 1944, in Houston.
Mischievous little eyes are peeping inside homes and vehicles this shopping season, looking to snatch up brand new clothes, shoes, gadgets and gizmos while the owners are oblivious to what's going on. But local law enforcement, who will be on the trail of these prowlers this week and throughout the holiday season, has ways people can keep their goods safe and prevent being victimized by burglaries.
Lillian Grace McMullin Moore
Lillian Grace McMullin Moore, age 73, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.
She was born Nov. 30, 1937, in Pheba, to Noel McMullin and Mona Lou Spears McMullin. She was a member of First Assembly of God.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at Memorial Funeral Home in Houston, with Bro. William Frasier and Bro. D.W. McGee officiating. Burial followed at Pheba Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
