January 12, 2011

By Bryan Davis

Due to the Christmas Holidays and the harsh economic times, the city took steps last month to try and give parents a little more time to get their kids involved in the city’s youth basketball league that will start next month.
The original sign-up deadline, slated for December 30, was moved back to January 15.
That means that Saturday will be the final day to sign kids up for participation in the league.
The season was originally scheduled to start on Monday, but that date will likely be pushed back as well.

The Hebron Christian Lady Eagles were among many Mississippi basketball teams that were not able to improve on their district records earlier this week.
With a heavy winter storm’s snow and ice still on the roads on Monday and Tuesday, the Lady Eagles missed bouts with Winona and Calhoun.
On Thursday night, however, the girls should have any trouble getting down to Macon to take on another district rival in Central Academy.
The Hebron girls have already played and defeated the Lady Vikings once this season, back on December 2.

The Hebron Christian Eagles missed a pair of crucial games earlier this week, due to snow and ice, but they will be back on the court tonight to face district rival Central Academy.
Looking to improve on some already solid divison performances, the Eagles will face the Vikings’ team for the second time this season. The Eagles defeated Central in the first match.
On Monday night, the Eagles were slated to face Winona at home, and they were scheduled to play Calhoun Academy on the road Tuesday night.

West Point soccer is on the rise.
The Green Wave program may be young, but it is one that is developing each time the players hit the field.
Head coach Keith Manning is also a football coach for the Green Wave, and he wants to transmit what makes that program successful to his own.
“We have to build off our football program,” said Manning, whose boys team beat Choctaw Central on Thursday and narrowly got defeated by district rival Saltillo on Saturday. “We have to take their ideas and success and carry it over into other programs.”

This week’s winter storm caused many schools and businesses to close around the state. Athletic events were no exception to this either, as most of the early-week activities on the area schools’ schedules have either been postponed or canceled.
Tuesday is perhaps the busiest night of the week for all schools when it comes to sports.
