Progress being made at Main Street site

Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being put back into the city of West Point by allowing Tombigbee River Valley Water Management District to repair the bridge on Highway 50, money that may be used for other street projects.

West Point’s week three game vs Columbus cancelled

West Point High School’s football game at Columbus high, scheduled for Sept. 3, has been canceled according to Steve Montgomery, Superintendent of West Point schools.
The cancellation stems from an issue with the MHSAA and the addition of a game against Mainland Fla., which takes place this Friday. In April, West Point officials applied for permission to add Mainland to the scheduled, giving West Point 12 regular season games, which is one over the allowed number of 11.

A sweeping success

What a day it was in West Point Saturday with over 200 dedicated volunteers working together to make the city look its best in the First Annual Big Tidy Up.
City and County leaders teamed up with the Clean Up committee of the West Point/ Clay County Growth Alliance to lead the clean up efforts.
Several families worked together to get Catherine Bryan Preschool in tip-top shape and everyone, including the kids, enjoyed it, said Community Director for the Growth Alliance Martha Allen.

West Point says no to loan companies

New pay day and title loan companies wishing to start business in West Point are facing a moratorium until the city can make further decisions on whether or not these lenders should be permanently banned from the city.

Diamond Eagles win fourth in a row in Starkville

Ever since falling in back-to-back games to Oak Hill two weeks ago, the Hebron Christian Diamond Eagles have been on a tear.
They are winners of four consecutive ball games, including three this past weekend at the Starkville Exposure Tournament.
Before those games, the Lady Eagles played Winona, at home, last Thursday evening, and they blasted them 13-0.

Busy but short practice week for Wave starts

The West Point Green Wave football team (1-0) will be making its much-anticipated trip to Daytona Beach (Fla.) this week to take on the Mainland High School Buccaneers.
For the Wave, it’s going to be a short week of practice, as the team departs on Thursday to its destination.
“It’s business as usual for us,” said Green Wave head coach Chris Chambless. “We always use Mondays to correct mistakes from Friday, and then we start working on our next opponent.”

B.T. “Ben” Brashier Jr., age 88, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, in Roy, Utah.
Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced by Calvert Funeral Home in West Point.
Calvert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

T.J. Rodgers Jr.

Thomas Jefferson Rodgers Jr., age 84, passed away on Monday Aug. 23, 2010, at Darlington Oakes in Verona. He was born in Mansfield, Ark., on Feb. 20, 1926, to Thomas J. Rodgers Sr. and Sudie Mae Neely. Mr. Rodgers was owner of TJ’s Army-Navy Surplus store for many years. He was retired from the United States Naval Reserve having served in WWII.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Robinson Chapel with the Rev. R.C. Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point.

Lecter Mae Boswell

Lecter Mae Boswell, age 82, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 22, 1928, in Oktibbeha County to the late Willie Wiley Jones and Lillie Jane Ray. She was a seamstress for Artex International for several years and a member of Siloam Baptist Church.
Graveside Services are today, Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at 2 p.m. at West Point Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Payton Myers and Rev. Jearl Hunley officiating.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. today, at the funeral home.
