John Dixon Jr., age 84, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral services are Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at 2 p.m. from New St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Judias Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point.
Visitation is Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.
In the world of high school football, there is no rest for the weary.
For Oak Hill Academy, that axiom has proven true for two straight weeks to open the season.
On Friday night, Oak Hill, with 18 varsity players, stood toe-to-toe with Class AAA power Pillow for more than two quarters, only to see the Mustangs – with their roster of 55 – eventually pull away in a 31-6 win.
While the roster numbers don’t lie, Oak Hill head coach Leroy Gregg refused to offer those facts as an excuse.
It’s now safe to say that everybody who paid to see Friday night’s showdown between the Green Wave of West Point and the Mainland Buccaneers got their money’s worth.
It didn’t matter if these fans never saw the beach or the beautiful sunrise over the Atlantic. It didn’t matter that the 40 percent chance for rain at Daytona turned into a dismal 100 percent reality as the game kicked off. The West Point fans, and Mainland alike, were treated to some of the best football the Southeast has to offer on Friday nights.

Every player was exhausted, the sun was three hours gone, and the rain was falling hard, but the West Point football team was going to the beach anyway late Friday night.
The reason? It was a reward for one of West Point’s biggest regular season wins in years.
Behind a stout defensive effort and bruising ground game, West Point won its 16th straight game here Friday night with a 14-0 shutout victory over Daytona’s Mainland High.
