Raiders seek second district win in tonight’s home match against Carroll

The Oak Hill Academy Raiders got their first district win by default a couple of weeks ago when Winston Academy forfeited to them.
After falling to Manchester last Friday night in district play, the Raiders are looking to get their second credited league victory, but also their first on the court.
They will attempt to do this tonight, in a division match against Carroll Academy that will take place at Oak Hill.

Rev. George Washington Sr., age 83, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Funeral services are Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at 1 p.m. from Hogan's Chapel A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Dr. Willie B. Lairy officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Creek Cemetery in Pheba.
Visitation is today, from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carter's Mortuary Services Chapel.
Carter's Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Hebron duo creating season to remember

The Hebron Christian School basketball teams have been playing some of their toughest competition of the season as of late. Last Saturday, the two teams hosted one of the state’s leading powerhouses in Leake Academy. Both Leake teams were victorious, marking the first loss of the season for the Lady Eagles.

Ward headed to Memphis in 2011

Three years ago, Perrance Ward played his final snap of high school football for the West Point Green Wave. He left West Point at the end of the fall of 2007, and he would not start again on a football field until this past August.
Graduating from Southaven that Spring, Ward began his journey toward playing football at the next level. For the safety, it’s been a long road, but after a season under his belt at East Mississippi Community College, the West Point native is getting a chance at senior college ball.

Stephenson takes resume to North-South Game

Out of all of the football players in the state of Mississippi, only a few are chosen to represent their schools in the Bernard Blackwell North-South game, which will be played on Saturday in Ocean Springs.
West Point native Zach Stephenson will be the lone representative for Smithville High School when the game starts at noon on Saturday.
The 6-foot-6, 280 pound offensive lineman sports a large athletic and academic resume coming into the game.

Walter E. Stokes III, age 86, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Washington Care, Greenville, Miss., surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services for Walter E. Stokes III, are noon, Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Trinity United Methodist Church of Greenville, Miss. Burial is in Greenville Cemetery, under the direction of Boone-Wells Funeral Home, Greenville.

Donna Bingham Barmore

Donna Bingham Barmoe, age 51, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at her residence in Maben, Miss.
She was a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross and an active member of the Double Springs Baptist Church.
Memorial services are Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at 2 p.m. from the Double Springs Baptist Church in Okibbeha County, with burial in the Clear Springs Cemetery at a later date.

Martha B. Williams, age 76, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Mrs. Williams was born July 2, 1934, to Shelton Brand and Mildred Goodwin Brand in Parchman, Miss. She lived most of her life in Monroe County. Mrs. Williams graduated from Houston High School and Draughn's Business College. She was a self employed therapist, a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a charter member of the Aberdeen Jr., Women's League.

Genice D. Brown and Eddie Brown Sr. of Cedar Bluff and Kenneth D. Taylor Sr. of Starkville are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Amanda Nichole Taylor to Jay Tavaras Ewing, son of James and Barbara Ewing of Mantee.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Richard R. Deanes Sr. and the late Susie Mae Deans and the late China N. Taylor Sr. and Almeda Taylor of Starkville.
She is a graduate of West Point High School and Itawamba Community College.
She is currently employed with Starkville Manor Health Care.

Lady Raiders crush Manchester

The West Point Lady Green Wave defense put on a show on Friday night, giving the home crowd a second straight win here in West Point as they defeated Aberdeen 55-33.
Most of Aberdeen’s scoring came in the last quarter, and by the time they were able to put some real points on the board, Kelsei Ewings and the Lady Wave had already mounted a sizable lead.
In the first quarter, West Point came out exploding on both sides of the ball. Ewings led the offense to 17 points in the first period, and the defense held Aberdeen to just five points.
