Mary Ella Smith Johnson, age 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, after battling Alzheimer’s.

Everything the Lady Eagles of Hebron Christian School practiced for came down to the North State Tournament and their 1-0 win against Bayou. The tougher than usual schedule their head coach, Cass Tapley, had arranged, prepared them for the toughest battle of their season.

The West Point Karate School will get to show off some of the local talent, as well as host fighters from across the nation on Saturday night.
The seventh annual Karate Tournament will be held at Union Hall, and it will be an all-day event, starting with the Grappling event at 9 a.m.
That will be followed by the Sharp Tournament at 11 a.m.
At 1 p.m., the sparring tournaments will begin.
“It’s a fun event for kids of all ages,” said Sensei Albert Lee, who said that fighters all the way from North Carolina will be on hand.

The West Point Parks and Recreation got the soccer season off to a good start on Monday night. The season will continue on Thursday, with the 8 and 9 year-olds kicking things off at 6 p.m.. The Yellow Badgers will play the Red Bulls on Field 2. The Silver Vipers will play the Green Machine on Field 3.
Stewart, Brown engagement
Mrs. Charline and Mr. Bill Stewart, of Louisville, are pleased to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Mandy Suzanne Stewart, to Charles Alan Brown, son of Mrs. Margaret and Mr. Mike Brown of Cedar Bluff.
The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Beatrice and Mrs. Clarence Sullivan of Louisville, and the late Mrs. Carrie and Mr. Winford Stewart Sr. of Louisville.
Mae Olga Cliett Thompson
Mae Olga Cliett Thompson, age 97, passed away, Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
Mrs. Thompson was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Montpelier, to the late Myrtle Merideth Cliett and Ira Pipkin Cliett. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and a member of Palestine United Methodist Church.
Mae Olga Cliett Thompson was married to Lee Howard Thompson, he preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1978.

As the head coach of the defending state champions, West Point’s Chris Chambless is accustomed to getting every team’s best shot.
That’s exactly what the Green Wave got from visiting Oxford Friday night.
West Point dodged a bullet Friday night, stuffing a potential game-tying 2-point conversion attempt with 91 seconds left to hang on for a thrilling 22-20 win and to take control of the Division 1-5A race.

Third down. Game hanging in the balance. Possibly a division title at stake.
Sounds like the perfect time for A West Point player to come up with one of the most memorable plays of the season.
That’s exactly what Will Harrell did Friday night.
Harrell, a junior wide receiver, delivered a catch for the ages late in the third quarter of West Point’s 22-20 win over Oxford Friday night, preventing a costly turnover and giving the Green Wave the opportunity to cash in with a pivotal field goal just four plays later.

Friday night’s loss to Manchester was disappointing for the Oak Hill Academy Raiders, but that did not mean the end of their season or their hopes of getting into the playoffs.
This team has proved its resiliency before in the 2010 season, bouncing back from an 0-4 start to win two in a row, including a conference win over Carroll.
“We still have an opportunity to get into the playoffs,” Gregg said. “But if we’re not going to play with anymore passion than tonight, it’s not going to happen.”

The Carroll Academy Rebels (4-3) have not had a lot of trouble scoring points this season.
Coming off a 46-18 win over Deer Creek, they faced another non-league opponent on Friday, in the Eagles of Hebron Christian (1-6).
The Eagles have had a tough time scoring this season, with 20 being the most they’ve scored in any ball game.
They would get about a third of that on Friday, falling 47-6 to the Rebels, who are brushing up for more conference action.
