For the second straight week, the West Point Green Wave needed to turn away a last-second two-point conversion in order to stay unbeaten in district play.
One week after surviving a 22-20 scare against Oxford, the defending 5A state champs found themselves in a similar dogfight Friday night, as homestanding Lake Cormorant scored with 1:53 left in the game to close to within a point.
Eschewing the chance at tying the game, Cormorant went for the win, and West Point defensive back Jaquille White forced an incomplete pass to help the Green Wave escape again, this time with a 28-27 win.

Friday night’s Oak Hill-Kirk game was not a district match. There were no direct playoff implications for either team, but for the Raiders of Oak Hill (3-6; 1-1), this game was just about as important as any they’ve played this year.
Coming off a dismal performance at Manchester the week before, the Raiders had to have a boost in confidence. With two games to go before facing Winston for a shot at winning district, there was no way the Raiders could go into that game with the level of play or confidence they had in Yazoo City.

The Hebron Christian Eagles (1-7; 0-2) had a 22-14 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter against the Rams of Immanuel (4-5; 1-1) on Friday night.
The Rams took back the momentum on an 80-yard half back pass from their own five-yard line, and they took back the game, scoring 21 unanswered points to defeat the Eagles 35-22.
“It was a heartbreaker,” said Hebron head coach Greg Watkins. “We played real good ball.”
The Eagles led most of the game, thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by Marques Robinson and a 65-yard touchdown rush by Jay Shaw.

The West Point ninth grade football team found their defense in the second half of Thursday night’s game, at home, against the Yellowjackets of Starkville. The visitors, on the other hand, left their defense in Starkville, as a wild offensive display resulted in a 50-32 win for West Point and a district title for the Green Wave team.
“The kids played hard,” said Green Wave ninth grade coach Brian Sellers. “These kids have worked hard, they’ve earned it and they deserve it. “It’s because of their blue-collar mentality, which is what this town’s all about.”
