The Annual Palestine Cemetery Workday will be held Saturday, May 19, from 8 a.m. until noon with lunch provided.
All interested people who have relatives buried in the cemetery and those who will need the services of the cemetery in the future are asked to attend. Participants are asked to bring hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, etc.
Dangers are lurking all over the Internet, and for that reason the West Point School Board of Trustees is making sure policies are in place to keep students and faculty in the district from the risks associated with Internet usage.

The administrative hearing on the non-renewal of West Clay Elementary Principal Sandra Murray's one-year contract recommenced Tuesday at the Clay County courthouse after being in recess for several weeks.
Bob Marshall, attorney for the Clay County Board of Education, went into cross examination of Murray who took the stand and testified that she has done nothing wrong, and, thus, should not have been served with a notification stating that she will not return as principal for the 2012-2013 school year.

Daisy Latham Anthony, age 80, a retired Assistant Manager of Freds Retail and homemaker, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at her residence in Columbus.

Ruby Gibson "Dot" Beatty
Ruby Gibson "Dot" Beatty, 79, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Facility in Gainesville, Ga.
Ruby Gibson "Dot" Beatty was born Feb. 5, 1933, in Columbus to the late Lida Bell Lollar and Linwood Gibson. She was a Case Worker with Clay County Welfare Department for 10 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in West Point. Mrs. Beatty has lived in Clay County and West Point since 1956. She married Lennis Beatty Dec. 29, 1951, in Columbus and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2007 .
William Vernon Southern Jr.
William Vernon Southern Jr., age 90, passed away Tuesday May 1, 2012 at North Mississippi Medical Center of West Point.
William Vernon Southern Jr., was born June 27, 1921, in Clay County, to the late Valena Yeary and William Southern. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific and served in WWII. In his working years he was employed at Babcock and Wilcox and later owned and operated Southern’s grocery. In retirement he enjoyed working in his shop and garden. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
